Alumnus Brian Cauble is cited in the online Birmingham Magazine as one of the 11 Big Thinkers/Innovators in Birmingham. Brian's area is iPhone applications.

21 Nov 2009 - Green, Vaughn selected for 2010 IEEE Positions

In the recently held IEEE meetings, Prof. Green was selected as IEEE Secretary for 2010. As Secretary, he will also serve on the IEEE Board of Directors and chairs the IEEE Governance Committee. Dr. Vaughn has been appointed to serve on the IEEE-USA Nominating and Appointments Committee.

11 Nov 2009 - UAB Homecoming Celeb

E&CE senior and UAB Student Branch Chair Jessica Ford made the news today as part of the UAB Homecoming celebration. As reported elsewhere as well, UAB Engineering had significant participation in the event.

24 Oct 2009 - It's over

Congrats to our team (see next news item). They are tired but they made it to the end. Precise results are not available for several days but the team placed in the top third forth of those competing. They found it enjoyable but very challenging. They are off to get well deserved rest now. Thanks to Prof. Green and Dr. Vaughn for serving as proctors for the event. The group talked a bit about potentially hosting a miniature version of the event as a UAB IEEE Student Branch activity.

23 Oct 2009 - The contest begins

Christoffer Koperniak, Casey Haralson, and Jacob Huggart are representing UAB's IEEE Student Branch in the IEEE Extreme Programming Contest this next 24 hours. Most of the problems are machine-graded so contest status information exists while the contest is running but real results won't be available for a few days. According to the IEEE Extreme Facebook page, there are 696 teams competing this year. Good luck to the team!

08 Oct 2009 - Prof. Green elected IEEE Director-Elect

In the recently held IEEE elections, Prof. Green was elected IEEE Delegate-Elect/Director-Elect for 2010/2011. In 2012 (and 2013), he will serve as an IEEE Delegate/Director on the IEEE Board of Directors.

19 Aug 2009 - Results of UAB BSEE Alumni Survey

Dr. Jannett, the E&CE Department ABET Coordinator reported the results of the most recent BSEE graduates survey in an e-mail to E&CE Students and Faculty. From his summary:
In summary, the overall survey results indicate that BSEE program graduates hold engineering positions, get promoted, see increased levels of responsibility, lead teams, pursue graduate or professional degrees, pursue licensure, pass the FE exam, and have the opinion that their undergraduate engineering education has been of value in their career.

April 2009: EGR111 Robotics Students Compete

The UAB EGR111 Team consisting of Justin Gray, Josh Jones, and Nolan Jones won the local race between the three competing teams from the Spring EGR111 Thursday class. This team created a robot based on a design consisting of Lego hardware and team written software that controlled motors, sound generation, and sonar. The contest's challenge to the teams was to navigate to a target arriving as close to the target as possible without touching it. On its best run, the winning team's car took 20 secs to position itself within 4 cm of the target.

April 2009: New IEEE Student Branch Officers Elected

In elections held 21 April 2009, members elected

  • Chair - Jessica Ford
  • Vice Chair - Jacob Huggart
  • Treasurer - Chris Koperniak
  • Secretary - Tareq Fayyad

These officers take over in Summer Semester. Congratulations to all. A big thank you to the outgoing officers who have served the group and the Department over the last year.

April 2009: EE499 Team Lead Ford to speak to IEEE Alabama Section

The IEEE Alabama section will have its Monday meeting at UAB (BEC157). Paul George and Jessica Ford will be the speakers. There is a pre-meeting meal for those who register (student meals are funded by the Section).

March 2009: E&CE EE499 Students Compete

The UAB EE499 Class consisting of Jessica Ford, Arthur James, Dmitri Platonov, and Philip Ward entered the SoutheastCon 2009 Hardware Contest. The team's entry shown on the left placed 24th in a field of 38 ahead of sister schools UA and UAH. A YouTube show of all of the entries is online (UAB is about 3min 48sec into this video.) Other UAB students participated in the software contest, website contest, and t-shirt contest. A draft of the 2010 contest was also distributed at the event held in Atlanta, GA.

October 2008: Engineering Open House Winners

Congratulations to the UAB IEEE Student Branch for their efforts in organizing and executing the 2009 E&CE Open House Skit for the E&CE portion of the Engineering Event. The student group consisting of Stefan Schmidt (leader), Jessica Ford, Carrie Self, Sandy Naccarato, Ishan Hakima, Pam Fletcher, Yvone Lane, Jim Diggle, Christofer Pitts, Latoya Henry, Seamus McDonald, Tareq Fayyad, and Rhiannon Rivers was recognized with the Student Choice Award for 2008. Congratulations and thanks to all.

April 25 2008: Media Coverage of Winning Car

The UAB Media Relations department has released a story on the hardware team and its success. The story is included in the UAB eReporter's April 25 edition. Included in the story is a short video shot at UAB of the car in action with Matt Ridley explaining its operation.

April 5 2008: We won!

Tonight, at the Region 3 Hardware Contest in Huntsville, AL to an crowd of over 500 attending the Region 3 Awards Dinner that was part of SoutheastCon 2008, the UAB team using the car based on BEPR defeated the Mississippi State car to win the 2008 contest. The team consisting of members from BEPR and QuickerPickerUpper had to modify their entry at the contest to not use their compass system as the placement of the contest tracks precluded operation of the compass. As winners of the contest, the team received the trophy shown and the Region 3 Traveling Trophy (for one year) which has the winners of all Hardware Contests back to 1981.

Mar 2008: It's a Tie!

UAB E&CE Department and the UAB IEEE Student Branch held its annual local hardware contest to choose between the various team designs for submission as the UAB entry in the Region 3 Hardware Contest. This year, three teams competed: QuickerPickerUpper, RoboCube, and BEPR. After two contests and extensive questions of the team by the judges, teams QuickerPickerUpper and BEPR were declared to be tied for first place. They have been charged with creating the best team entry from their two vehicles for submission as the contest entry which will be held 5 April 2008 as part of SoutheastCon 2008 in Huntsville, AL.

Mar 2008: IEEE Student Branch Officers

Congratulations to the new IEEE Student Branch Officers. Stefan Schmidt will be the new Branch Chair, Jessica Ford will be the new Branch Vice Chair, Rhiannon Rivers will be the new Branch Secretary, and Joseph Marcrumm will serve as the next Branch Treasurer. These officers will assume their positions in Summer Semester.
