Engineering Camp 2009

Overview

Your team is to design and build a robot that will assist a bomb squad in positioning the pre-emptive explosive device next to the suspicious suitcase.

Robot starts from behind a barrier that protects its handler from the suspicious suitcase.

Dealing with the Threat

The threat is a 2 dimensional picture of a suitcase (8" by 10"). It can only be approached from the front. Jarring the suitcase could cause an explosion so robots that move or knock over the suitcase are penalized 200 or 400 seconds respectively in lieu of the distance portion of the scoring calculation. The robot should quickly approach the suitcase, stop as close as possible without knocking over the suitcase and emit a "detonation noise".

The robot must not cause damage to the walls, floor or suitcase.

Contest Management

Teams will be asked to bring their cars to behind the block as shown in Figure 1. They must position their car behind the block at a distance of 0 to 10cm from the block. No portion of the car can stick out behind the block. The judges will say "Go" and the team may push a single button to activate their robot.

The distance of the block to the target will be 3 to 5m and will not be available till the start of the contest when all programming must have been completed.
